“Bluff Charge” (2024)
80x30 cm | 31.5 × 11.8 inches | acrylic on canvas
This painting is rooted in my own encounters with Grizzly bears across remote regions of Canada, often while traveling by canoe. Coming face to face with a grizzly is always charged with conflicting emotions—profound awe and respect for the animal, but also the immediate need for caution in the presence of a powerful apex predator. In this painting, the bear surges forward in a bluff charge, cutting through shallow shoreline water. My goal was to portray the scene as realistically as possible, capturing both the energy of the movement and the physical presence of the bear. I wanted the viewer to feel the intensity of that brief encounter, where beauty, power, and potential danger exist all at once.
